Our Vacation
August 25th - September 3rd
We had a great week of camping at the Woodland Park Campground in Grand Marais. We spent our days building sand castles, picking rocks, swimming, hiking, and running Triathalons. Yes, that's right...running triathalons. Grand Marais is home to an annual triathalon and as we discovered a children's thriathalon too.
As we were engineering a sand castle one morning, the organizers asked us if Andrew would like to participate in the triathalon later that morning. He said "Okay", and I headed back to our campsite to get his tricycle. He would be running in the 4-year-old heet at 11 am. So, he did his stretches and shook the sand off his swim suit in prep of the big race. The course included about a 50 yard dash down the shore (feet had to be in the water), another 50 yard jaunt through the sand to where the bikes were parked, and then yet another 50 yarder to the finish line on their bikes.
So, Andrew was in a heet with 4 4-year-olds, all about a head taller than him. The parents could run with the little ones, so I put dad in charge of Sam and the camera.
We were off! Andrew smoked the competition on the beach sprint, but once we cut up onto the sand he lost some ground.... he did a couple of face plants into the sand at which time he said, "Mama, I need a break".... I picked him up and showed him that he was only feet away from his tricycle and he was off again. He hopped onto his tryke and he was a pedaling machine...so close to the little boy ahead of him. He crossed the finish line in 3rd place!!! They gave him a great medal for his efforts and everyone was amazed that the littlest and youngest one in the crowd took 3rd place.
On Friday we all headed over to the Ausauble Lighthouse. Andrew was very excited to go up into the lighthouse with his dad.
We had several visitors too. My friend Krista spent a night with us and my mom made the trip over as well. Jason's parents came on Thursday and spent the weekend with us. Then, on Sunday, our friends Brad, Lisa and Emma Jones spent the day on the beach with us.
If you are ever up that way be sure to go to the Dune Saloon, aka the Lake Superior Brewing Company for the "Rock Hound" pizza, an order of garlic parmesian popcorn and a pitcher of their Granite Brown. AWESOME!!
We had a wonderful, relaxing week. We will have to do it again soon.
