Camping in Grand Marais

Our Vacation

August 25th - September 3rd
We had a great week of camping at the Woodland Park Campground in Grand Marais. We spent our days building sand castles, picking rocks, swimming, hiking, and running Triathalons. Yes, that's right...running triathalons. Grand Marais is home to an annual triathalon and as we discovered a children's thriathalon too.

As we were engineering a sand castle one morning, the organizers asked us if Andrew would like to participate in the triathalon later that morning. He said "Okay", and I headed back to our campsite to get his tricycle. He would be running in the 4-year-old heet at 11 am. So, he did his stretches and shook the sand off his swim suit in prep of the big race. The course included about a 50 yard dash down the shore (feet had to be in the water), another 50 yard jaunt through the sand to where the bikes were parked, and then yet another 50 yarder to the finish line on their bikes.

So, Andrew was in a heet with 4 4-year-olds, all about a head taller than him. The parents could run with the little ones, so I put dad in charge of Sam and the camera.

We were off! Andrew smoked the competition on the beach sprint, but once we cut up onto the sand he lost some ground.... he did a couple of face plants into the sand at which time he said, "Mama, I need a break".... I picked him up and showed him that he was only feet away from his tricycle and he was off again. He hopped onto his tryke and he was a pedaling machine...so close to the little boy ahead of him. He crossed the finish line in 3rd place!!! They gave him a great medal for his efforts and everyone was amazed that the littlest and youngest one in the crowd took 3rd place.

On Friday we all headed over to the Ausauble Lighthouse. Andrew was very excited to go up into the lighthouse with his dad.

We had several visitors too. My friend Krista spent a night with us and my mom made the trip over as well. Jason's parents came on Thursday and spent the weekend with us. Then, on Sunday, our friends Brad, Lisa and Emma Jones spent the day on the beach with us.

If you are ever up that way be sure to go to the Dune Saloon, aka the Lake Superior Brewing Company for the "Rock Hound" pizza, an order of garlic parmesian popcorn and a pitcher of their Granite Brown. AWESOME!!

We had a wonderful, relaxing week. We will have to do it again soon.

Time to Catch Up!

What a summer! Oh, wait....is it over already? So, it has been a while since I added to our blog. It's time to play catch up.

July 27th - Andrew's 3rd Birthday
We had a great 3rd birthday party for Andrew with all of his friends and a lot of family. We had a lot of fun playing on the beach and eating cake!!

August 2nd - Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago
We headed down to Chicago in early August for a cousin's wedding... oh, the traffic. Of course it was the same weekend as Lallapolooza and a Cubs series, and every highway in the greater Chicago area had construction on it, so we didn't go anywhere very fast. I would have to say that the Lincoln Park Zoo was definately worth the city headaches. The kids all loved the animals...

August 20th - Pretend Preschool Day
Andrew and I attended the Pretend Preschool Day at his school. We loaded the bus and headed off to preschool. It was great... we both got to see what a day of preschool would be like before the real thing in September.

August 23rd - Jaime and Rob Beranek's Wedding
Jaime and Rob had a beautiful wedding and reception at the Rapid River Lodge. The kids looked great all dressed up and had a blast dancing to the beat.

September 2nd - Eating Chocolate Cake
Sam loves making messes with her food. She makes anything look good.

September 8th - First Day of Preschool
Andrew was very excited to ride the bus by himself. I was a little nervous...he is the first one on the bus. But he did great. When he got off the bus in the afternoon, he was sad because the bus drove away...without him. He started walking across our yard and then down the road (with me right behind) following the bus. It took me a good 75 yards to convince him to go home and have a snack. You'll have to turn your head to watch the video...I can't figure out how to rotate this video...

September 8th - Brushin'
Andrew and Sam LOVE to brush their teeth. You are saying, "That's great!". Well, it is, but they would stand at the sink for hours if I let them. It's pretty entertaining.

D-A-N-D-Y, D-A-N-D-Y, D-A-N-D-Y and Sammy was her name, Oh...

Look at this child! Samantha is like a cat...she has to kill something before she will eat it. Usually making a huge mess before it makes it to her mouth. Yes, that is peanut butter and jam in her ear. She likes to innocently drop food on the floor for Baily too. Jason and I will have our hands full with this one! What a sweetpea!

Happy Independance Day (a little late...)

We had a wonderful Independance Day weekend! Jason and I both had a long weekend so we packed up the trailer and brought it to the most beautiful campsite. Yes, we hauled it all the way to our front yard. We had a great beach, firepit, gazebo and really handy shower facilities! We slept three nights and had breakfast in the camper and coffee on the beach. It was wonderful and the kids both enjoyed themselves.

Our friends Keri and Dan were home from Denver so we got together with them and our friends Brad and Lisa. We spent a lot of time catching up and letting the kids play (5 kids under 5). Keri took some incredible pictures of our weekend...

I will post more of Andrew soon...

Conductor Cain

June 29th, 2008
Look at him go! Andrew had us (and half of Munising) in stitches at the Munising Art Festival yesterday. I gave him the straw out of my iced tea and told him to conduct the city band. He was so into it! He had the crowd and the band applauding...

All Business...

Happy 1st Birthday Baby Sam!!

Our baby girl is one year old and walking! It won't be long and she will be running after her big brother. She loves to say "Uh-oh", "Pat, pat, pat" (Little Einestein's) and her latest is "Hello". What a sweetheart!

Look at her go!

This was a really fun cake to make...

May 24th, 2008 - Samantha took her first steps! She walked from Grandma to Daddy and impressed the enire crowd at the Soderman's party.

Memorial Day Weekend, 2008 - We had a great time camping in our new camper trailer this past weekend. We stayed at the Little Bay de Noc Campground on the Stonington Peninsula. Grampy and Grandma roughed it in their tent and are now considering a trailer too. The weather was great; pretty windy on Friday and REALLY wet on Sunday evening/night. Andrew and Sam were troopers and are ready to go again!
